I decided this morning to return to the wildebeest kill where I saw a mother with four cubs yesterday.
All of the cubs were playing away from the lioness just by the roadside. With very full bellies they waddled along and then promptly sat down in some sandy soil.
It must be difficult to rear 4 cubs and provide food for them on a regular basis. There were no other adults around so she must have made the kill on her own. The youngsters were still suckling although they were starting to play with the carcass and consume some of the meat.
Tomorrow is my last morning in Amboseli and I shall not be sorry to leave the appalling roads behind. At lunchtime I stopped and helped someone change their flat tyre - a consequence of the bad conditions.
With a 4.30-5.00am start tomorrow morning (and every morning so far) I have the Mombassa Highway to contend with for another five hours before I reach Nairobi in the dark.
Wish me luck.
