I saw this black backed Jackal wandering up a track. Jumping out of the vehicle I lay very still hoping it would turn towards the rising sun giving me some light on the face.
Animals notice movement and as I hardly moved - I did have to breathe - it came as close as a few feet before it scarpered away.
I do like to get out of the vehicles although it is of course prohibited. If you are sensible with no one else is about to copy your actions and you are not encroaching too much on the animal behaviour then I think it's ok.
