If you look carefully at this photograph you will see, in the bottom left hand corner, part of a lioness. She is keeping very still and making herself look small with a tussock of grass behind her.
She is alone with no pride to help her and has wandered too close to a hyaena den. With little chance of escape and the hyaenas calling for reinforcements her life is in serious danger.
A hyaenas bite is immensely powerful and can easily crush bones.
I watched for 20 minutes. The lioness growled and called for help to no avail but she stayed put and waited it out. The hyaenas, of which there were 15 in total eventually gave up and sauntered back to a reasonable distance with some entering the den and some standing guard.
Fantastic to watch....and a happy ending.
