I watched a large clan of hyaenas squabbling over a buffalo carcass whilst this lioness came to feed. The hyaenas had full bellies, the lioness thin and needing to eat as she was one of two mothers with cubs.
The hyaenas held her off and with no other help she had to turn around and, as she went to cross the river, I managed to squirm out of the vehicle and grab this shot.
With so many hyaena in the Mara there is rumour that some may have to be culled. All of the predators have very large 'families' which makes it so hard for those separated from their prides, clans etc when they are looking after newborns.
