If you look carefully at the trunk of the tree in this photo you may see that there is a lot of dried sawdust in the middle. Whilst the tree was alive the termites came and built a mound using the tree trunk as stability. The termites then ate away the insides of their host and eventually killed it. They have now moved on to decimate another host.
Insects are amazing. Unfortunately I do not know very much about them - I'm still learning. As I walked from my room this morning I very nearly trod on a line of safari ants. Approx. 20 million strong, a line of travelling ants (on migration) can take 2-3 hours to pass by. If you are unfortunate enough to tread on some there will be an army of them coming after you. Although they are blind they emit a pheromone and can detect predators - in this case your foot - and they will sting. One sting will not hurt you but thousands of stings can put you in hospital for days. Out here in the bush hospitals are few and far between.
