Last day in the Mara - and it rained hard. Luckily these two lionesses were watching a Herdsman graze his 100 strong cattle.
The Massai have many cows which they use as a sort of bank account. When grass is in short supply they take the herd onto the plains which is forbidden.
Whilst I wanted to watch a lion kill it did not seem appropriate to watch them killing cattle. Firstly the herdsman will not get compensated as he is on protected ground and secondly, if the lion kills a cow then it gets the taste for an easy kill and will continue to predate the domestic bovines thereby putting its own life in danger as it will be killed.
