You can spend hours watching the antics of monkeys and baboons. When there is a large troop of baboons the older, stronger males will try to have his wicked way with the females and, if feeling confident enough, will fight to become head honcho. The existing alpha male is no stranger to outbursts of masculinity and has gained his place by being the toughest. He will not easily relinquish his position.
The powerful jaw, speed of movement and aggressive behaviour all back up the immense canines which he will readily use to combat the aggressor.
There are of course times when the young dude overpowers the old timer - in these cases the females will automatically follow the newbie and the outgoing alpha will have to settle on the periphery where he will get little attention.
