A young calf able to walk under the belly of its mother will be about 1 year old.
This calf is of that age and will keep close to the mother or another older female for protection. The young are very well looked after by the whole herd until they start to become more independent - maybe 3-4 years old.
The young suckle from in between the front legs of the mother pushing their trunk above their heads as they do so.
Dusting has a dual purpose. Firstly it is used as a sun screen to protect the virtually hairless skin from burning and secondly to try and rid any irritating insects - mostly to no avail.
